Betta Weirdly Attacking Mystery Snails

$

Hey y'all --

Weird deal; I have two male bettas (separated) that have suddenly begun attacking the mystery snails in their tank. Showing full-on displaying; erect finnage, fin flicking, flared gills, close circling, head butting and nipping. Looks for all the world like mating behavior. Have kept mystery snails in with them for a while now and suddenly seeing this behavior. Anyone have any ideas what the sudden difference might be?

20 gal community tank

I just set up a new 20 gal standard planted tank. while it is cycling, I'm trying to decide which fish to stock it with without overcrowding. I have:

4 corys
4 neon tetras
3 fancy guppies (male)
2 platys

I would like to have more guppies and tetras but I don't want to overstock. Would I be able to fit anymore while keeping my tank sustainable? I'm also thinking about adding SAE but i'm not sure if they're schooling fish or not. I've read articles that say they are and ones that say they aren't. So, are they schooling fish or are they not? I would like too only put one in my tank, but if I need a school, I wont add them. Let me know! Thank you!

My tank build started 6month ago. 130 gallon display tank, 55gallon sump, diy stand, drilled the tank, built over flow box, built custom trickle filter in sump, automatic water level filler, automatic ph sensor and dosing pump, programmed lights automatic sunrise and sunset, moonlight in the evening. Manzanita wood found local, sand bottom, rock wall, plants. Ammono shrimp, snails, fish and more fish. Not done yet, I also plan on adding a living wall above the tank and maybe an expansion tank or two in the sides. I enjoy this hobby.

Scarlet Badis Killer - Ich or Something else

$

Stock - 6 CPD 2 scarlet badis. Some bladder snails.
Size - 10g
Heavily planted
0-0-20
68* F
The scarlet badis both have some sort of white marking on them (only one) around teh dorsal fin (not on it)

The first to have this mark is now very sick and most liekly a goner. It actually seems like the white spot, which is right udnerneath dorsal fin, has eaten away the scales in that area. It is quite a small spot. Now, he is lethargic and breathing heavily.

The second fish to get this, about 2 days after, has a white mark in a similar area. His mark looks more raised and matches more the description of ich as a grain of salt. He is still eating heartily, but is starting to clamp his tailfin.

I feed them mostly grindal worms and at times baby brine shrimp, both live.

There is no funny behavior from anything else in the tank. CPDs are normal and snails are normal and aren't showing any signs of snail stress.

I am using Kordon rid-ich since it is snail safe but it doesnt seem to help. Symptoms started maybe 5 days ago. Very fast progression I guess, I think the fish will be dead in only a few days.

So what deos this disease sound like to you
Also, is there something wrong with how I am keeping them?
maybe i am overstock for scarlet badis... maybe 2 is too many in a 10g with my hardscape and plant layout (although it is haevily planted and they each should be able to territory without getting in each others way, but maybe not) Additionally, I've never noticed too much bullying. Occasional chasing after feeding
maybe i really should only have had these in species only. The store though, had them in multi species tank.
maybe their diet is poor
These fish are fully grown, but still young.

For salt and heat, i am a bit afraid to try. This will kill snails and i am afraid of quarantine stress.
This will also melt my plants and am afraid be stressful

Convict Tankmates/General Advice?

Hey guys, new here, and getting back into the aquarium hobby. I'm heading to college in Fall of 2018, so I'm looking to keep my fish varieties fairly hardy so that my parents can take care of them for my freshman year until I move off campus. That being said, I have recently acquired a Male Convict Cichlid, who is at least 4 years old. Before I got him he was in a fairly small tank, and I think it may have stunted his growth, as he has no head bump, and he is around 2.5-3" long. I've had Convicts in the past in species only tanks, and this guy seems fairly timid (hiding when I enter the room, only coming out of his cave when I sit still for around 15 minutes, etc). I had to rush the setup job so I "cycled" the tank using Tetra Safe Start Plus, and some gravel and ornaments from a well established tank. He's currently in a 29 gallon, with an Aqueon Quiet Flow 20 filter and a Whisper Air Pump rated for up to 40 gallons. Attached is a picture of the tank. He likes the cave on the right more, but the one on the left is from his old tank so I left it in just in case. I know firsthand how aggressive Convicts can be, but I was wondering if there's any hardy (preferably schooling) fish that I could add after a while? I've heard of some successes with Convicts and Tiger Barbs or Skirt Tetras, but I'd like to get a second (or third or fourth) opinion. Thanks guys!

Stocking limits

Tried this once & got multiple views but no responses
Rearranging tanks & need to know what my limits are for gish so I put everyone in the right tank
Have a 55, 65 & 30 high, each comes with a 6" pleco
"Fish" are guppies, assorted tetras, 5 Amano shrimp & 50+ neo shrimp (probably more but they move to fast to get an accurate count)
Currently tetras are in 55, guppies & shrimp in 60 30 os empty eccept for pleco (giving current occupants to hubby for his 125)
Was thinking of moving tetras to 60, guppies & amano to 55 and doing only the neo shrimp in 30 tall but need to know my limits to make sure this change is possible

Can I add plants during fishless cycle? (5 weeks in)

Hi everyone.

I'm into 5 weeks now of my fishless cycle. Ammonia is being consumed to zero in 24 hours. Nitrites are "almost" being consumed to zero in 24 hours, this is after dosing ammonia to 2.0ppm. So as you can see I'm almost cycled.

Will adding live plants at the stage be ok? Maybe even help it?

I have sand substrate, some rocks and a few pieces of bogwood.

Thanks.

Are these ph ranges acceptable?

I've made other posts about my ph situation and trying to figure it out.
From my tap, with the API FW kit, my ph reads to be 7.6 (even though the lfs tested it at 6.8 using test strips). But, my tank ph is usually a lot lower than that.

Yesterday I performed a 50% water change to get my nitrates down some (they were around 40-80). Since I've been wondering about my ph changes, I decided to track them for a few hours and again this morning to see if there were great fluctuations. The first picture is the first four hours after the water change, the second picture is the next four hours, and the final picture is this morning's test, almost 24 hours after the water change. Are these fluctuations in my ph normal and safe for fish? I am at the end of my cycling process and am ready to get my fish, but don't want to if these fluctuations in my ph need to be investigated more. Over the weekend, I broke up a cuttlebone and put a piece in each of my filter intakes to try to raise the ph in my tank so it would be closer to what is coming out of my tap.

I'm having trouble getting nitrate levels down in my aquarium. They are consistent at over 100ppm. My question is such. Will increasing my plants help? Or should I invest in a nitrate reactor?

New tank-new fish

$

Hello, I recently just upgraded to a 55 g fish tank from a little bitty 10 g tank. With the bigger tank, I was wanting to go a bit more exotic. I was thinking of getting an Axolotl. I have done a fair amount of research on them and have discovered that there are few fish that are compatible with these beautiful creatures. I was wondering if anyone has experience with having tank mates with these fish.

Biota Captive Bred Mandarins

Hey all.

There is a local company offering these guys: Biota Captive Bred Mandarins.

They are fed frozen and pelleted foods, as well as graze on pods of course. Living about 15 min from the warehouse I can pick them up as well as pods any time during business hours.

Anyone purchase a captive bred Mandarin and how did it go?

I am familiar with how they can eat a bunch of pods, more than a average keeper would raise.

What other obstacles are there to consider?

Are the "wait a year to have a mature tank" to accomodate the pods population?

Tank size is one, but if not for the tank supporting the pod population and the fish eats regular foods being fed and dosed about every 10 days with a bag of pods. What size tank would be good for him to reside?

It would be him and a Yellow Clown Goby, and maybe a Royal Gramma, an Orchid Dotty back or something colorful.

28G a possiblity with lots of rock? Or with Pipefish and in a 50G???

I have had the same LR in my nano tank for 4 years and my other tank has been cycled for about 4 months up for 6 almost 7 months. I am fairly patient so I can wait. It is unlikely that Captive bred fish will not be available in the future. So Not worried about that.

But if it may be possible to keep a (maybe even a pair of) Mandarins, I would like to start getting planned up /prepared for such a tank.

So ideas and thoughts please?

Planning to talk the the vendor about the tanks they feel they should be in too.

I have a small blue line grouper-got it a couple weeks ago. I was feeding it raw shrimp from the local supermarket but now it has not been interested-seems to look and act fine otherwise. There is a a small moray in there that is also refusing the shrimp. What are you guys feeding yours?

Good or bad?!

Moving with a tank

Hello!

We are in the process of moving into a new house and we're wondering if anyone has advice on how to move our fish tank!

We have a 20 gallon tank with one dwarf gourami, a few zebra danios, two corys and a plecco.

Our initial thought was to transfer our fish to a temporary container filled with their aquarium water, and have a 1/3 filled tank to physically move. We plan to do it all in one shot (limit time our fish are in a temporary bin).

Any advice is welcome!

Thank you
