Lamp blacklights okay?

$

Hi there

I randomly bought a "blacklight" led light from a department store last year for halloween and i recently put it into the lamp that sits on the same table as my betta fish.

I never turn on his tank lights because it upsets him and he spends the entire time attacking his reflection, so i was hoping this light would be dull enough not to bother him.

After i google searched blacklights and fish i am concerned. Some posts say it can cause eye problems...others that it's not natural etc... the difference between what i have read and what i have, is that i have not installed my light as a tank light. Instead it is just in a lamp above it. There is also a tank lid on my aquarium.

In your opinion, is this safe or a hazard? I dont want to do anything that will affect my betta (Bubbles) in any negative way.

Bulb is from Rona, 120V

Thanks! :D

Freshwater Puffers

I saw some freshwater puffers at my LFS. I'm considering adding a few to my tank. What can anyone tell me about keeping them? Do they like a brackish water? Will they be ok in a semi-aggressive tank? Any help would be appreciated.

Gonopodium Stuck in net!

So here's the story about how Dick got his name. When netting the male guppy into another temporary tank so I could clean the aquarium, his gonopodium got stuck in the net. The fish totally stressed out and tried to free himself, but he was stuck.
I panicked so I softly tried so tear the net a bit wider, tried to push him off, but he stayed stuck and I was affraid he would die of stress.
I started googling but couldn't find anything about gonopodiums stuck in nets, but similar cases and the ending wasn't all to good. Most of them died or had to be euthanized.

I finally grabbed a plastic spoon and slowly lifted the guppy up and for some reason he got unstuck.

The fish is doing fine now, still has his gonopodium complete and got baptised with the name Dick.

What is growing on my coral?

Texas holey rock

Thinking about getting some Texas holey rock for my Malawi tank. I wanted to know if they have hollow areas that fish get stuck in and can die in. I have had a fish get stuck in a plastic rock and die and had to saw it open to get it out. It had been wedged in and was crushed from trying to get out. Will that happen to Texas holey rock?

Can anyone give me advice for my ellioti pair? The fry are almost/already free swimming and I'm not too sure on how to remove them, when I should remove them and if a fry net/box or a smaller separate tank would be better etc...

platy sex change?

I have a gold platy that I got two months ago when she was fairly small. She had a black fan-shaped anal fin, so I figured she was a female. (See the "before" photo!) She's gotten bigger over the last few months, and last night I noticed the black fin is gone and it's been replaced with a longer, gold fin. It doesn't look exactly like a gonopodium; it's almost like she's clenching shut a gold fan-shaped fin. As you can see from the cloudy tank, I had some problems with a sponge filter I installed around my HOB filter's intake tube last night, so she could be stressed. I read that it's possible she was very young when I got her and "bloomed late" into a male fish. Any thoughts? I tried to get the best "after" picture I could, but they were moving around a lot. (In the before photo, she's the one in the upper left, with the obvious black fan-shaped fin.)

sponge filter + HOB filter = cloudy water?

$

I did a water change last night in my 10 gallon tank. I also cleaned out the intake valve and inner tube of my Top Fin Power 10 HOB filter and replaced the carbon filter. (I didn't remove or rinse the bioplate.) I added a sponge around the intake tube for the first time, since I felt like my water had gotten less clear than it used to be and could use some additional filtration. I tested the water after the change, and everything was normal (20 ppm nitrates as usual, 0 ppm nitrites, 0 ppm ammonia). However, this morning, my tank was extremely cloudy and the ammonia had increased to 1.0 ppm. I removed the sponge filter (which had absorbed a lot of sediment), did a 20% water change, and added 2 mL of Seachem Prime, which I thankfully had just bought!

I'm confused about what happened. I didn't rinse out the bioplate, so I don't think I killed any beneficial bacteria. (I did remove it from the tank. Does it need to have water running over it constantly?) Did the sponge basically block the filter? As I said, it had a lot of sediment in it. Any thoughts would be appreciated! (I also noticed my female platy was now a male, which is another post in a separate thread. It's been an eventful 12 hours!)

Could I have damaged my filter motor??

I did something stupid tonight. I had my Fluval 306 filter turned off to remove crushed coral I had in it.

So when I re-connected the hoses I turned the filter on and it started making noises. So wondering what it was I eventually realised I had forgotten to open the Aquastop valve! :(

So it was running for just under a minute with the Aquastop valve closed. It seems to be working as normal at the moment but I'm just worried I may have damaged the motor!

Has anyone else did this?

Female Peacock cichlid trying to breed?

Hello, i have a male and a female peacock cichlid in my tank and the female seems full of eggs and is trying to get the male to breed. She is staying next to him circling him trying to get him to breed with her but he does not seem interested in breeding and attacks and chases her away. Why would the male not be interested in breeding?

Thinking of this aqueon 29 but know it is not 100% as needed for a reef tank. Years ago I was a SW Junkie but have forgotten most everything,. Besides a blue light, what would I have to purchase? I am retired and on a fixed income.
Thanks

75g peaceful new world cichlids set up

$

About to start setting up a 75g tank. Was looking for a wet pet and have decided go with a new world cichlid set up. My one option is a single oscar.
Other option is a tank centered around a green severum. Maybe pair him with another peaceful cichlid. Don't want another severum cause I don't want want babies. Any suggestions. Do I need dither fish. What about a bottom feeder? Do Severus interact like oscars with people? This is the biggest tank I can get so don't suggest anything that will out grow a 75g.

New Tank advice?

I have a 29gallon that has previously held three goldies and a pictus catfish. Obviously overstocked, cramped and unhealthy. Just transferred all four fish to better homes.

I want to try some tropical fish in a planted tank, and learn more about proper care of an aquarium. My sister wants to get glofish and I have done some research which basically says they are the same as zebra Danios, so I assume they will be fine in the same conditions.

I was thinking of black sand, with a good variety of plants, six or so glofish and some other varieties as well. I obviously don't want to overstock again, or add fish that won't be compatible. I was considering mollies (is there a big difference in the types? Can you have black and dalmation, for instance? Would two males or two females be okay if I don't want a lot?) What other fish would work? Are there any I should absolutely add for tank health and community?

Planning to reset and replant with new substrate and cycle things for a few weeks before adding fish. This will be a bit of a new experience for me, as we never really had a very healthy tank before and I don't fully understand the process.

Are there any immediate problems or issues with my plan? Anything I absolutely need or should be aware of?

Ghost Shrimp?

Hi, I am new to aquarium keeping, and got two ghost shrimp to go with my 1 inch goldfish. They mainly ignore each other, but here are some times when they fight:

1) a shrimp attacked my goldfish when I was doing a water change

2) goldfish lunged at shrimp( this happens often)

I've heard of a macrobrachium. Do you think they could be that? Is my goldfish safe?

Shrimp Infestation

My 10 gallon ADF tank has been overrun with both ghost and cherry shrimp. I started with 3 of each and only lost 1 RCS. I knew it was possible for the RCS to multiple but not the ghost. At first I was able to keep up by catching them and feeding them to the inhabitants of my other tanks but I can't seem to control the pop any more. What is the most efficient way for controlling the pops? When I lift up my logs and caves they swarm out; most are about a centimeter long.

Wrong type of ammonia

Hi! I am starting to cycle my 20 gal tank and yesterday added some ammonia for the first time but then realise it had surfactants on it. I did a water change but should I rinse the filter with tap water as much as possible to eliminate any traces of the surfactant? I had also added some bacteria in a bottle of the Fluval brand.
Thank you

HELP!! Bought a used tank and I need advice!

So heres my story. My boyfriend and I are renting a place and the landlord said no pets, but said we could have a fish tank. So I did research and went to the local pet store and asked a few questions and was informed that the bigger the tank the easier to maintain it is. So I watched a lot of youtube videos on how to set up a tank and how to do water changes and how to de-chlorinate. We found a used 55 gallon tank that came with the works. We got the tank, stand, 2 heaters and a 7 inch Rhino pleco that came with the tank. We were moving the tank about 50 minutes so we had to empty the entire thing. We thought we didnt want any of her nasty fish water so we cleaned the tank with vinegar and water, we got a brand new filter, new rocks and decoration, and a new air-rater with new tubeing. We set the tank up and de-chlorinated the whole 55 gallons and got the temp to about 75 which was fine for just the pleco. So we put him in the tank the same day as set up not knowing we were supposed to let the tank cycle for a week. We went to petco the next day to buy fish and told the person helping us how we just got our tank set up yesterday and they said nothing to us. We bought 3 snails two catfish 4 tiger barbs and an beautiful angel fish. Brought them home and put them in and the water started to get cloudy so i added some water clarifier. I didnt want my angel fish to be all alone without another angelfish so i went to every pet store in a 50 mile radius trying to find another angel the same size as mine because we bought a good size one. At the pet store i was going to boesmans rainbow fish and 4 more tiger barbs and told the pet store employees the same thing i told everyone else and they made it sound like all of my fish were going to die because i didnt let it sit for a week they asked me how my levels were and they wern't aweful my ph was high and it showed i had very hard water on my 5 in one test strip. So I got a Ph balancer that stabilized it to 7. That same morning I added more water to my tank so I de-chlorinated the entire 55 gallons. I did the ph blancer like they told me to and while reading the instructions I relized the ph blancer had a de-chlorinator in it so i double chlorinated the entire 55 gallons. They also had me buy a biomax filter insert to help with my ammonia lvls and after having it in my filter for a day i had white particles and a layer of dust everywhere in my tank. You couldnt even see to the back of the tank. So i took that out because I thought that was my issue. I talked with some friends and youtubed videos about bacteria bloom because that is what everyone thought I had and everyone said it shouldnt harm my fish that it will clear up in a week. Well now today 4/4 of my tiger barbs are dead. Everyone said not to do a water change but i read on this site to just change the water not to gravel vac the rocks because it would get rid of my good bacteria. So just now I did a 50% water change and i used the ph balancer to bring it to seven and de- chlorinate my tank. All of the levels look fine besides the total hardness it is very very hard. Im just so worried and stressed for my fish and my fishtank to be clean and healthy for my new babies. I also read on this sight that if you have old filter cartilages from an established tank to put them in your filter to seed your tank so I put the filters that the lady we bought the tank from in to my filter. Does anyone have any advise at all for me??
